Canker sore

The medical terms describing a canker sore are apthous ulcer, apthous stomatitis, ulcerative stomatitis or aphthae.

Canker sores are oral (mouth) ulcers. An oral ulcer is an opened sore or lesion due to a break of the soft mouth tissue. Lesions inside the mouth can have different causes: physical or chemical injury, bacterial, fungal or virus infection, allergies, trauma, cancer or other medical conditions, a weakened immune system, etc.

Physical injury usually results from accidental biting, rough foods or using a too hard toothbrush.

Chemical injuries are caused by certain drugs such aspirin or by alcohol consumption.

Oral ulcers are irritating, painful, and can recur. Having an oral sore makes eating uncomfortable and painful.

Canker sores and cold sores are the most frequent types of oral ulcers, but there's a big difference between them.

The first ones develop on the tissues inside the mouth (interior of the cheeks or lips, on the palate, under the tongue or under the gum line) and are not transmissible.

Cold sores are liquid-filled blisters (fever blisters) and usually occur close to the lips, on the edge of the lips or in the corners of the mouth.
They are caused by a herpes virus (herpes simplex virus) and not by cold (as some people may think because of their name) and are transmissible.
Like other viral infections, the signs of cold sores may be fever, inflamed glands, tiredness, etc.

About 20% of the Americans suffer from repeated oral ulcer. Women and children are more likely to suffer from this oral condition than men.
Mouth ulcers may appear at any age, but generally, they are more frequent between 10 and 40 years old.
They last about 10 or 14 days and generally heal by themselves.
