At Home Teeth WhiteningTeeth whitening can be performed at home. Everyone can get whiter teeth using various dental whitening products available on the market. The most popular are: whitening toothpastes, bleaching gels, strips or trays. Unlike toothpastes, the whitening gels, stripes or kits use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as active ingredient. Whitening (Bleaching) Toothpaste Whitening toothpastes are surface whiteners. Like ordinary toothpastes, they clean the teeth but are not really effective comparing to other whitening procedures. They usually contain mild abrasives or polishing ingredients (like baking soda for example) that beside cleaning, can eliminate some superficial stains. In order to get the teeth whitened beyond the surface, you need to use a bleaching substance. Gels, strips and trays are usually based on these bleaching substances. Whitening Gels Whitening gels contain peroxide as active ingredient. They are usually transparent and have a lower concentration of peroxide. Using a gel is a easy method to get whiter teeth. You have just to apply the gel directly on the teeth respecting the product's directions mentioned on the label. Whitening (Bleaching) Strips This relatively new procedure is easy to use. The strips are available over-the-counter or at the dentist office. Those obtained from the dentist are more effective since they contain higher peroxide concentration. The most popular whitening strips are Crest Whitestrips. They are two varieties available : ordinary Crest Whitestrips and Crest Whitestrips Premium. The premium version contains a higher concentration of peroxide. The bleaching strips are made of flexible, thin plastic and are covered with whitening agent (generally peroxide) on one side. Due to the the adhesive like composition of the bleaching agent, the stripe can stick on the teeth. They have to be applied twice a day for about 30 minutes during 14 days for the Crest Whitestrips, or during 7 days for the Crest Whitestrips Premium. Because the strips are transparent, you can where them without being remarked. A disadvantage of the bleaching strips is the fact that they can not perfectly cover the teeth. As result, some parts of the teeth are left unbleached. Teeth Whitening Kits These whitening products are very effective and affordable. The kits are available over the counter or at the dentist's office. They contain a plastic tray that has to be filled with peroxide gel and applied on the teeth for about 30 minutes or more per day. They can be also worn overnight. The duration of the treatment depends on the type of product you use and should be clearly indicated on the product's label.
